Colts today welcomed back Liversidge, Lane, Rhodes Winsor and A.Wisker for the the game against AFC Crooked Billett. The game started off brilliantly again for Colts as they raced into a 1 nil lead after Lane met and prodded in Huffords brilliant 30yd crossfield pass.
Lane and Hufford linked up shortly after but Hufford was denied by the keeper diving low and blocking at Huffords feet. Then a moment of misfortune occured after 20 minutes when a hopeful long ball slowed down in the strong wind resulting in Lee comming flying out to collect the ball. However as he got to the ball he seemed to disturb a previous knee injury which meant he could no longer particpate in the match. N. Parker was brough on for Lee and Hufford replaced Lee in goal. The first half didnt create too many chances a couple of headers from Lane from set pieces were probably about all that came about.
The second half definitely had an edge to it, tackles were flying in everywhere and everytime the ball went into the area Hufford was being put under severe pressure, as AFC Crooked Billett went looking for the equaliser Colts were looking dangerous on the counter especially down the left where Luke Bennett was making his debut, the lack of a good advantage was also costing Colts dearly as the ref kept destroying any chance of a Colts counter attack with a frequent blow of a whistle. A dippping volley from the edge of the area nearly saw AFC Crooked Billett on level terms but fortunately for Colts it flew just over.
Colts should of taken more of an advantage when they were given an indirect free kick for a back pass however they didnt capitalise. AFC Crooked Billet did finally get back on level terms when a a hopeful ball into Hufford's areas was unfortunately fumbled by Hufford straight into the opponents path who managed to stab in the equaliser. It was a moment to forget for Hufford especially in front of current Stevenage keeper Chris Day,up until this point Whittens defence had been magnifcant with Rhodes Winsor in particular standing out. Mullen then had the opposition keeper worried when his volley was scrambled from the bottom corner.
Bennett on the left was causing many problems down the wing but just wasnt getting his chance, he should of got his chance though when N.Parker got through and spent too long on the ball resulting in a good covering tackle, however N.Parker knows he should of been quicker and picked out the unmarked Bennett. Parker then tried to redeem himself by getting Bennett in from a flick headerbut this time the keeper denied Bennett as he tried prodding it past the keeper. Lane could of given Colts the lead again after a quick break when Bennett found Lane who couldnt beat the keeper who made a great save from close range.
Frustrations were boiling over and Mullen was booked for a late tackle. Bartlett was then introduced for N.Parker as Hufford went for the winner, with 5mins to go Lane had a chance to make it 2-1 from the spot when a good flick from Bartlett found Bennett who ran between two players and was taken down. Lane and Mullen had a dicussion about who should take the penalty before Lane sent the keeper the wrong way finding the bottom right corner. The goals didnt end there though and Colts were punished late on after a cross from the right found a AFC Crooked Billett player with enough time to cut in and curl the ball in off Huffords post. The Colts defence thought that the crosser was clearly offside but our linesman hadnt noticed.
